After holding countless events across the past two years focusing on educating children across Greater Shepparton on healthy eating habits, imparting practical meal preparation skills and generally encouraging healthy attitudes towards food, Ms Thorp is set to finish her role in July.
“Throughout my time as a healthy kids adviser, I have been asked too many times where our food comes from,” she said.
“Do apples grow on trees, or underground? Where does milk come from? Is bread a healthy food or an unhealthy food?
“So on and so forth.
“Now that I know this role is coming to an end, I decided to go out with a bang and create my very own Food Bowl Festival, which will celebrate all the wonderful produce and food we have in the area.”
The Children’s Food Bowl Festival is a free outdoor event designed to educate children on healthy eating and to “celebrate the local region that is the Goulburn Valley — The Food Bowl”.
The event will take place on Friday, April 12, from 10am to 2pm at the north end of Victoria Park Lake, Shepparton.
Ms Thorp said the event was the first of its kind, and that she believed she had saved her best until last.
“There will be stall holders, with fun and interactive activities for children, plus a main stage with amazing live acts,” Ms Thorp said.
“The likes of Bertoli’s are going to be there, Murray Dairy, SPC, FoodShare, The Waste Team from council and so on and so forth, with Nic Healy from ABC Shepparton being the MC.
“This is my first ‘whole community’ event that has a strong focus on educating children around eating nourishing, delicious foods and developing a positive relationship with food.”
The event is on the last Friday of the school holidays, and is free for families, kids and parents to attend.
